A question that many people ask me is, are other people getting their Disciplined Agile Certifications? Yes of course! You may recall that we’ve been tracking the DA certifications since PMI acquired PMI and wrote about them as recently as January 2021 in the Update on Disciplined Agile Certifications. Let’s take a look at how many people have achieved their certifications since then.
The Project Management Institute is the authority behind the Disciplined Agile certifications. Initially, there wasn’t much detail published about how many people were obtaining the various Disciplined Agile certification though recently there has been monthly update on the Critical Path blog. The chart below shows the growth of all the PMI certifications through June 30 and highlights the DASSM and DASM certifications.
While the above doesn’t reflect exponential growth, it is pretty significant growth for the two newest PMI certifications which are barely a year old. As you can see, they are outpacing some of the older PMI certifications like Scheduling Professional, Portfolio Management Professional, Program Management Professional, and Professional in Business Analysis.
In fact, as a point of reference, the PMI-ACP was introduced in January of 2012. After one year, there were 2,063 people who had achieved their Agile Certified Practitioner designation. The following chart shows the growth of the PMI-ACP over time as well as the growth of some of the other PMI designations. As you can see, in their first year the DA certifications are off to a better start than most other other certifications.
Vitality Chicago provides Disciplined Agile Training courses leading to certification. So we decided to make it as easy as possible for people to get their PMI DASM or DASSM certifications. That is the point of our free eBook – 5 Steps to Get Your Disciplined Agile Certification Now.
This downloadable ebook includes a step-by-step guide to make the process as simple and straightforward as possible. And it is chock full of interesting tips and tricks. Here are the key sections of the book:
Without a solid “why”, some students go into training without proper motivation. Ticking the box for one more certification MAY be a good “why”, but is that going to sustain you to do the hard work to prepare, train, and pass the certification exam?
In this section, we describe how to choose the right training course, choose a training provider, prepare for the training and complete it successfully.
Unlike the PMP, PMI-ACP, or some of the Professional Scrum Certifications from Scrum.org, the Disciplined Agile certifications require that you take a training course. And for that, you will need to get the training from a PMI Authorized Training Partner.
The list below (from the appendix of our guide) includes the known North American Authorized Training Partners for the Disciplined Agile Certifications and their regular price for their courses. We do recommend that you consider more than cost when choosing. You can read about some of the other considerations in our guide.
In this section, we describe the preparation steps that will lead to success. Some, me included, find it helpful to take some practice exams. Many training providers (Vitality Chicago included) offer free practice exams for the DASM and DASSM certifications. Keep taking the practice exams and fixing your incorrect responses until you are consistently passing.
We also recommend that you attend an exam prep session. We currently include a 1-hour exam prep session for all of our course attendees.
Finally, review your training materials and rewatch some of the associated videos. For each course, we provide you a detailed study guide that ensures that you review the most relevant materials and refresh your memory of them.
The next section provides some information on the exams themselves. The DASM and DASSM exams are not proctored but they are timed, and that can lead people to stress out. You will have 90 minutes to complete the 50 questions on the exam. That is sufficient time if you are familiar with the material. Though it is open book, I would not recommend that you try to look the answers up!
The final step is to celebrate your accomplishment! Yay, you passed.
In addition to the specific steps outlined above, we’ve sprinkled helpful “Success Tips” throughout our Guide. These come from others who have already passed the exam and achieved their Disciplined Agile certification.
